Question: I'm curious about tattoo symbols?

A good friend of mine is planning on getting a tattoo. He just got sober and is feeling empowered. He wants a way to remember that when he's feeling down and he thought a tattoo would be great. A permanant positive reminder. He asked me to help out on something that he could use to mean that. He was wondering if there was symbol or some kind of way to represent progress and success. I've tried to google it but haven't had much luck on finding anything that would fit quite right. Is there anything of the type?

A ball of string. It sounds weird, but think, people used to tie strings or ribbons around their finger to remind them of something they needed to do/ get. Maybe something like that could be his positive reminder?
