There are two "certified " tattoo schools in the US, but, one thing to keep in mind, you would be hard pressed to find a job at a shop if you went to a tattoo school. The apprenticeship teaches a lot more about the art than the schools. They are just out for your tuition and don't care about anything else. If I don't give an apprenticeship, I only hire artists who are well established and have a thick portfolio, or someone who has apprenticed under someone I know or respect. The artists in my shop represent me as well. Best wishes on your endeavors. |

No, because Tattooing is not a recognised trade in Australia there is no formal qualifications you can get. To become a tattooist you need to do an apprenticeship, in which they teach you all the basics, such as cleaning, autoclave and different machine techniques and how they work. Although there is not a qualification, do something else in art such as visual art, graphic art, modern art, through tafe. My friend is a tattooist now and he is still studying Modern Art at tafe. Its pretty much a qualification saying that you know how to make art. |

It seems that I am one step behind rocket today, she again hit the nail on the head. Those so called courses are nothing but money gimmicks. They are as worthless as the paper they are printed on. If you want to actually work in a shop I suggest avoid these things like the plaque. If you are one of those that just want to be a 'scratcher' and do this illegally from your home then go for it. But if you were to attempt to get an apprenticeship and you mention taking one of these courses you would be laughed right out the door. Any apprentice we take on we want to take on from scratch. One that does not know the first thing about administering a tattoo. That is because we don't want to have to first break them of bad habits in order to teach them the true techniques of this amazing art form. Nothing is ever respected in this industry like coming up through the ranks the way most of us did. If you are good and driven you will most likely pass your teaching artist in skill as long as you would stay open minded and willing to learn new techniques or even discover them and introduce them to the industry. It is ever expanding and now there are many artists, like myself, that have ventured into bringing realism art into the tattoo world. |
