(Posted by: munich13 on 2007-09-23 18:13:54)
I am a single mom with 2 small kids and I can' t really leave them to go learn how to tattoo. I want to make some extra money, I have a BA in Art, so I kinda wanna buy the materials and see if there's a book, video or anything that is recomended to learn the basics of tattoo, and tips on how to practice and stuff. |

What the guy said about going to a tat parlor to get advice is good. This site has really good kits though. And books, etc to help you on your way. Good luck! newyorktattoo.com/ tattoo_kits_20_ct.htm |

You should not buy the supplies if you aren't an apprentice or have a license to tattoo. Only a professional artist can teach you right but you don't get paid for that. Have a part time job and find a tattoo shop that will let you apprentice under them. It is illegal to tattoo anyone without having a license, the consequences are jail and fines or more. Apprentice and go into a shop setting to learn. -I'm not a bitter artist. Advising some one on how to practice tattooing without training isn't smart. That is asking for "scratching " and no one in their right mind would advocate going into this. |

You have to apprentice, really. Tattooing is a craft and without a real instructor, you can do some serious damage to people. You simply have to meet people in the industry. You have to know people. Most reputable supply companies will not sell to people who don't work in a legit tattoo shop. |

All these bitter tattoo artists.... go for it!! you can go to many sites and get machines and needles and tubes and everything you need. Check some local "rocker " type shops in your area too. I have a guy near me that i buy my supplies from at a great price. Start out with a 10 wrap machine. Just get something basic. And definietly if you have to money get videos and books. Thats how my husband and i started. He had a little more knowledge cause he spent alot of time at a tattoo shop (getting tatted and asking lots of questions). When our tattoing friends moved away, we decided to do it ourselves. I am a great artist, so he was right away confident in my abilities. Now we tattoo eachother and so some kick butt stuff.... again, GO for it, but let me tell you, you will get NO answers from tattoo artist on the internet. All the ones on here are bitter for some reason and all they do is tattoo then go on the internet and complain about how hard it is blah blah blah, and that you have to "know people ".... theres really know one to know, just someone that will let you practice on them,...... you can do it :) |
